TL;DW: Matchmaking, Seasons in 2025 & More Dev Update

A short rundown of updates from Pabro, Meddler, Phroxzon, and Cadmus.

Hey everyone, Pabro, Meddler, Phroxzon, and Riot Cadmus here with a quick TL;DR of today’s Dev Update:

  • Arena won’t be a permanent mode—but it will be a rotating mode returning in the first half of 2025.

  • While Swarm was more successful than Star Guardian and Odyssey, we don’t plan on making it a permanent game mode.

  • Players should no longer see themselves enter negative LP states when climbing (losing more per loss than gaining per win).

  • We’ve effectively eliminated instances with 2:0 autofill disparity or worse.

  • We’re evaluating a system called TrueSkill2, which can better help place smurfs—we’re still testing whether it’ll be good for League, and will let you know how the results land.

  • Teemo’s ASU (Art & Sustainability Update) is coming to the Rift in patch 14.20!

  • Happy Elf, Recon, and Badger Teemo skins will be increased to 750 RP from 520—but you can grab them for 520 RP until the change goes live.

  • Teemo’s getting a theme song! (Watch the video for a teaser.) Full theme drops next week.

  • Worlds 2024 kicks off on September 25.

  • Don’t forget your Pick ‘Ems! And check out the Global Power Rankings blog to get caught up to speed or see how your favorite team ranks globally.

  • The Worlds anthem comes out tomorrow and is by Linkin Park.

  • LoL Player Days starts on October 9th to celebrate your League journeys over 15 years!

  • Complete missions to earn in-game content, including a special Ann-Sivir-sary Sivir skin.

  • There will be three Player Days skins available for purchase: Cosplayer Neeko, Esports Fan Trundle, and Music Fan Gragas.

  • For every purchase of these 3 Player Days Skins from October 9 - October 28, 2024, Riot will contribute 100% of proceeds, as well as a 3x match, to the Riot Games Social Impact Fund.

  • In 2025, League will have three distinct thematic seasons, each with their own narrative, progression, and content updates—including a thematically-tied champion during each season.

  • Something gameplay-wise we’re trying to solve for in the first season is how a game can feel doomed when you have an exposed Nexus (but don’t worry, there are more big changes).
