One League // Kyumin Jang

At MSI 2023, Kyumin reflects on his time playing League during lockdowns, and how it contrasts with being able to experience it with so many people at a live event.

“I’ve lived in London for three years and I'm a big fan of League of Legends. I watched a few games in Seoul when I lived in Seoul, but this is my first game in London watching the like, eye to eye, not on Twitch or YouTube. I used to live here before I moved to Southeast London so this is pretty much my local area, so I’m proud that I was able to get a ticket, come here and make friends.

I think here feels like a much bigger event for me because I’ve watched the games in a smaller stadium, but here it’s bigger and there are many fans from international places and C9 supporters who shout loud, so I think the atmosphere here is a good fit for me! Especially in London, Korean players play so well so I'm pretty proud about this as well.

During the first lockdown, I stayed in my house all day for around two or three months and the only thing for me other than eating and sleeping was playing League of Legends. But there were lots of others like me and I created a group that season. We became friends and became like a community and we became social again at that time, so League of Legends made me feel much better. It was so helpful for my social isolation and more helpful for my mental health.

I think now is much better though because at that time I was a big fan of League, but here at MSI everyone's in crowds and it feels like everyone's supporting, shouting and clapping. I'm glad I could come in here and watch the games and it’s a pretty big global event to have after the pandemic so it's nice. I would say it’s an even more socialized League of Legends Championship now.”
